Operating Rules

1. Operating Personnel: During Event hours when Public on Grounds

  • a. Engineers: Minimum age 14 must prove to Safety Officer that he/she can operate engine/train and follow all rules.
  • b. Conductor: Must prove to Safety Officer that he/she can operate train, follow all rules and should have a whistle.
  • c. Engineers and conductors are responsible for their trains – they must keep an eye on their passengers for public safety – they have the right to remove or not seat any person from train acting in an unsafe manner or may be unfit to ride - possibly causing harm to themselves or other passengers/crew.
  • d. DURING STEAM-UP – 8 TO 9AM AND 6 TO 10PM, ANYONE UNDER 14 THAT WISHES TO OPERATE A TRAIN MUST HAVE AN ADULT IN THE SEAT DIRECTLY BEHIND THE ENGINEER. THE CAR DIRECTLY BEHIND THE ENGINE MUST BE A DESIGNATED OPERATORS CAR (OR TENDER) OR RIDING GONDOLA ONLY.

2. Engines, Steam: All steam locomotives must have a valid Boiler Certificate from either their resident club or a state certificate from the state which the locomotive is from. Certificate must be dated for the current year. Certificates from other meets are acceptable if they are for the current year.

  • a. During meets or large gatherings Engineers must demonstrate they can make one full circuit of the track, without stopping to build-up steam pressure. This demonstration shall be done with at least two (2) loaded cars in addition to engineers’ car if they wish to pull passengers.

3. Remote Locomotive Operation:

  • a. Remote control equipment must be operated within line of sight of the operator and at a distance of no more than 100 feet for direct radio control.
  • b. The remote-control equipment owner is responsible for having a safety shutdown mechanism capable of stopping their train in the event the operator control signal is lost.

4. Steaming Bays/loading/unloading area:

  • a. Use extreme caution in the loading/unloading area.
  • b. Young children must be supervised in this area during the loading/unloading of equipment.

5. Station:

  • a. Inside Yard Limits keep speed to a minimum, equivalent to a slow walk.
  • b. Yard limits are from the corner of the public bathrooms to the first signal bridge beyond the station and ICP.
  • c. ALL TRACKS THROUGH STATION AREA MUST BE KEPT CLEAR.
  • d. longer train loading/unloading will use track 2 and 3 so public can go around shorter trains on track 1.
  • e. Do not load/unload on Track 4 – it is a passing track and access to storage.
  • f. Wait for safety announcement to complete and station master to release you.

6. Track / Mainline:

  • a. The maximum speed on the Mainline is 6 MPH. Engineers exceeding set speeds will be warned.
  • b. Check speed with the MPH check system on the inside loop going toward the steaming bays at the south fence.
  • c. All trains with six (6) riding cars or more must have a conductor otherwise only five (5) cars will be loaded.

7. Signals - Obey all signals.

  • a. Red means STOP, 5 feet prior to signal.
  • b. Yellow means proceed with CAUTION – be prepared to stop at next light.
  • c. Green means GO.
  • d. If you should encounter a blank board (no lights) consider it a RED. Stop and proceed with EXTREME caution.
  • e. Blinking Red - Stop and proceed with EXTREME caution.

8. Switches:

  • a. Leave all switches aligned for main track.
  • b. Lockdown all car-barn switches (either direction you travel through them).
  • c. Do not back through main crossover on south side.

9. Night Running:

  • a. All trains running after dusk must have a Red Flashing Rear End Device (FRED), or red marker lights on the end of train and a working headlight.
